Imagine, if you will, a submarine descending to one mile for the first time. It reaches depth, the reactors seem to be running fine, and then something goes tragically wrong. A code is sent, but Davey Jones sings louder as the sub breaks up and is dragged into the cold, black, abyss. (15 k, 120 sec)

Thursday 25th May 2006 - Josh's Processional - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2006 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I decided to write a stately song for one of my better band members similar to Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 (which I have to play on the keyboard at graduation in a few days). For you composers: did you know you can take any melody and harmonize it by playing a third below the melody or a sixth below? The opening section of this piece demonstrates this easy way to harmonize. (24 k, 66 sec)
Tuesday 23rd May 2006 - Brandon's Alarm Clock - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2006 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I wrote this experimental piece for a great 8th grade tenor sax player. I had to save this MIDI at every step of the way because it kept crashing my composition program. This MIDI should not affect anything but your hearing. Listen to the whole thing. It actually starts making some rhythmical sense towards the long-awaited end. (24 k, 66 sec)

Saturday 4th February 2006 - BEFORE - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2006 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I thought I might try a little experiment. I just composed this around 7:00 PM, and at 10:00 tonight, I am hosting an all-night 'lock-in' for fifty sixth and seventh grade band members. When the lock-in is over at 7:00 AM in the morning, I will compose 'AFTER' and see what effect being up from 4:30 this morning (I now have an AM bus route) until 7:00 AM Saturday has on my composing. Adversity is what makes life fun because it gives you something to remember. (15 k, 130 sec)

Thursday 19th January 2006 - Windy Afternoon - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2006 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I never quite understood the difference between a two or four part invention (Bach style) and a fugue (must have slept through that 8:00 AM music theory class many moons ago). Well anyway, I'll let you be the judge. What is quite interesting is that we did not obtain a set of music rules from Bach. The rules and the way we still write most of our music were derived from the study of his compositions. (13 k, 79 sec)
Wednesday 18th January 2006 - Beethoven's Lament - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2006 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I caught a little mouse in the gym's concession stand this morning and the elementary kids named him Beethoven. While waiting for the 6th grade band to arrive (I now teach kindergarten through twelfth grade) I played in this sad little song. The mouse started jumping around in the jar I have it in. I think the mouse was more upset over my music than being trapped. I will take it home and let it go after winter (or when my wife finds out!!) (5 k, 121 sec)

Tuesday 20th December 2005 - Behind Bars - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2005 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This one is for you folks serving time. The chords keep on with a rhythm that must be as boring as the days and nights you have to suffer through, and the melody is as sad as I can make it, thinking about how I would feel being away from my loved ones and relatives every Christmas. (11 k, 143 sec)
Monday 19th December 2005 - The Two Bass Boogie - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2005 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. When fishing today I caught four bass using a devil's horse (a top-water lure with three treble hooks and propellers on each end). I was about ready to leave when I had a giant strike. The line was going everywhere. As the fish got closer, I could see that I had not one, but two bass. Both had hit at the same time and I got them both in. One probably weighed one pound and the other, two. I was so excited, I forgot to make the usual check of my line on the next cast, and as it was twisted around the end of the pole, the line snapped and the lure flew off to parts unknown. (The lake giveth and the lake taketh away.) (30 k, 164 sec)
Wednesday 14th December 2005 - Christmas Variations - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2005 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. If you listen to the whole piece, you will hear the Christmas variation. Friday 2nd December 2005 - Go Fourth - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2005 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This melody only uses intervals of a 4th. It is not very melodic. For your information, in music, an interval is the distance between two notes. (3 k, 29 sec)

Wednesday 10th August 2005 - Eskimo Parachute Dance - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2005 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. The Eskimos have a group activity of pitching someone in the air with a parachute. Rather than turning a cold shoulder, all gather in a circle called the o-zone. They begin running as the tempo accelerates and many hats fall off causing the loss of polar ice-caps. The heat generated by this causes the o-zone opening to increase. The Eskimos really think this song is cool, although, if you interrupt this tradition, one might point a pole at you and say 'Freeze!' (51 k, 199 sec)

12th November 2003 - Noble Nocturne - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2003 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I decided tonight to see just what Beethoven (with total deafness) was up against, so I used the mouse to input this little ditty with no sound. I will not hear it until Keith posts it. Granted, the melody is simple and step-wise, but so was the basic theme of Beethoven's 9th. After spending three hours on this little thing, how in the world did he write the rest of that symphony!? Try composing with no sound. It is really a challenge. (9 k, 126 sec)
10th November 2003 - Etude for One Hand - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2003 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I woke up this morning at 3:00 with an allergy attack. 7th December 2002 - The Rift - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2002 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Here is a little sixteen bar dirge that will test your hearing. It repeats five times, with the melody and bass splitting an octave further apart each time. You may have to ask your dog what it sounds like on the fourth repeat if you can get him to stop howling. This experiment produces both overtones and the famous MIDI hanging tones. The fifth time, I give your hearing and sanity a break and bring it back to where it started. (5 k, 132 sec)

To all MIDI writers: take any of your compositions, change all channel numbers to ten, leave the notes and clefs alone, and see if you get these sounds. I found them by accident. (15 k, 93 sec)

Sometimes, I compose by playing in a four bar phrase, and then copy and paste those four bars for two-hundred measures. I will keep adding harmony, bass, or counterpoint every four bars and then start reversing the process, deleting what I don't need for the composition. Do you still say a computer cannot produce overtones? (18 k, 84 sec)
13th February 2002 - Hymn tune 5 - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2002 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I decided to write a few hymn tunes (8 January 2002). 2:05pm: Here is a 6/8 style hymn. I wonder if a hymn was ever written in 5/8? Hummm. "Mission" Impossible. (3 k, 23 sec)
9th February 2002 - Country March - - copyright © 2002 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Is it southern gospel or a march? I think they cross over, and when you hear a men's quartet sing a song like this, the audience goes crazy. (7 k, 50 sec)
6th February 2002 - Hymn tune 4 - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2002 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I decided to write a few hymn tunes (8 January 2002). 1:47pm: This one sounds a little like an alma mater. (3 k, 79 sec)

30th January 2002 - Hymn tune 3 - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2002 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I decided to write a few hymn tunes (8 January 2002). 11:00am: wrote a little gospel song this time. If your foot doesn't start moving, better see a doctor. (12 k, 67 sec)
23rd January 2002 - Hymn tune 2 - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2002 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I decided to write a few hymn tunes (8 January 2002). 10:13am ... this is a traditional sounding hymn in 3/4. (4 k, 59 sec)
20th January 2002 - Reflections - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2002 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This piece can best be described as hypnotic ... is that a polite word for boring? I like the different chords that are deceptive but still use common tones in their progressions. (27 k, 149 sec)
16th January 2002 - Hymn tune 1 - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2002 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Having sung hymns all my life, I decided to write a few hymn tunes today (8 January 2002). I think I will aim for 20 before 12 tonight. (6 k, 106 sec)
14th January 2002 - Train - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. One of my Christmas presents was Microsoft's Train Simulator. After many hours of "training," I thought I might try making a MIDI sound like a train. What motivated me to do this? Probably a loco-motive, but at least I am on the right track. Oops, gotta get back to the football game. The guy's about to punt the football, but he's doing it just for kicks. (19 k, 150 sec)
12th January 2002 - Mourning for morning - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Well, Christmas break is over and tonight I am mourning for morning. At 5:00 AM tomorrow, it will be a morning for mourning. (10 k, 132 sec)
8th January 2002 - Jiffytune - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This should be called Overture for Hanging Notes. I got up at 3:30 on 26 December; too excited to sleep. I was flying to Cincinnati to see the grand kids. I thought I would write a quick MIDI. Who knows where these hanging notes come from? It seems if you revolve around the one and five chord too much they appear out of nowhere. I think the MIDI instrument choices may have something to do with it. Oh well, I'll just leave the MIDI as is. Maybe it's my soundcard. If anyone has a solution to this, let me know. (16 k, 89 sec)
6th January 2002 - Cat on the Keyboard - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. There was a composer named Cage back in the 60's that thought this kind of "music" would catch on. Thank goodness it didn't. (8 k, 150 sec)

2nd January 2002 - Christmas a la Mozart - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I wrote this about ten years ago, but never got around to making a MIDI out of it. Open it with any composition program, or just play it by ear. Feel free to perform it. (6 k, 60 sec)
December 31st 2001 - Christmas Fugue - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This may more of a two-part invention than a fugue. Its just a statement that goes around the circle of fourths, but each of the four melodic lines is repeated along with the next variation. After four voices state the theme, new voices are added with a repeat to the beginning while still adding a flat with each variation. The theme is classical in nature but not very traditional. (15 k, 93 sec)

I just found out two days ago that my college band director, Maurice McAdow, passed away last August. He was the most influential person in the history of Texas music education and one of the most important persons in my life. Mr. Mac, this one's for you. (9 k, 184 sec)
December 13th 2001 - Chorale for George - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. All of us who grew up with the Beatles are realizing just how short life is. We are but a flicker in the cosmos. You better make the most you can of this life as George did, and what better legacy than music; what I consider to be the second greatest gift from God. November 28th 2001 - Jonathan - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I took my friend, Jonathan, up to the band hall today to demonstrate how to write MIDIs. He has a PHD in computer science and an IQ off the scale, so don't take this little song as a literal portrayal. (13 k, 102 sec)
November 18th 2001 - Movin' On - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Here is a little fun with the vi-IV-V-vi, vi-IV-V-I chord progression. This song kinda' rolls downhill. It does not start over in the middle but changes instruments on the next variation. (21 k, 152 sec)
October 26th 2001 - Itty Bitty MIDI - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This is a percussion only MIDI. There can be no music without a beat, but you can have a great beat without a melody. (12 k, 83 sec)
October 20th 2001 - The Joe Frank March - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I wrote a march to honor each of my band directors. Joe Frank was my band director at Richardson High School (Texas). Because of him, Richardson, overall, has had the best band program in Texas for years. (55 k, 185 sec)
October 7th 2001 - On The Run - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This is a little lighthearted 1-4-5-1 beginning 6th grade band piece I wrote a few days ago. I wanted to give them some jazz but not outside their range and rhythmic abilities. The syncopated bass line the second time through was added for the MIDI. (45 k, 112 sec)

July 26th 2001 - Gamesong - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Just sitting here downloading games. Here is one that takes four minutes to download. Might as well write another MIDI. This one sounds like a lot of music, but were those pieces written in four minutes? (4 k, 143 sec)

July 20th 2001 - Requiem - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This is the kind of piece that, when a kid hears it, they ask "Who died?" Actually, a requiem is a piece of music written for the dead. Many classical composers wrote Requiem Masses. (5 k, 127 sec)
July 18th 2001 - Hillbilly Fugue - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I just got back from a vacation to Tennessee and Kentucky. Thar's music in them thar' hills! (50 k, 135 sec)
July 14th 2001 - Sousa goes to Church - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I don't know if John Philip Sousa ever led a church orchestra, but it might have sounded like this. Here is my combination of Semper Fi and the old Baptist hymn, When we all get to Heaven. July 6th 2001 - You Can't Beat That - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. As a band director, I tell my drummers "You can't beat that" when they miss a rhythm. They think I am giving them a compliment, but the flutes always catch the pun. (19 k, 120 sec)
July 4th 2001 - CHORDially Yours - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. If music is the universal language, then a piece like this might be considered stuttering. I wanted to overlay chords with different instruments just to hear what is would sound like. Sometimes, music (or just pure sounds) can just be "interesting" instead of "pleasing". (8 k, 191 sec)
June 29th 2001 - Pachelbel's Shotgun - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This piece is similar to Dan Rowe's Design Experiment. Pachebel's Canon in D is basically a theme and variations similar to what we are doing with (to) Dan's piece. I added some variations/deviations to Pachebel's piece. Bet you won't be using this at your wedding, although with shotgun in the title? humm------- (9 k, 99 sec)
June 23rd 2001 - Arp, Arp, the Arpeggio Man - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Even though the meter seems out of sequence, the different instruments on the various arpeggios make for interesting listening. For you MIDI composers, when those hanging notes start showing up, you know it's time to backtrack. I have found that with less duplication of notes on various staffs, the hanging notes can be eliminated.. (26 k, 170 sec)
June 19th 2001 - Kidsongs - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Here's one we all played if we took piano lessons, or knew someone who did. These little songs use only the black keys, and many self-taught piano players start making up songs with just the black keys. An example of this is the opening of the song Those Were The Days, the theme song to the TV show All In The Family. I think piano teachers use this song to keep kids from being afraid of playing songs with lots of sharps and/or flats. (16 k, 109 sec)
June 16th 2001 - X - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. 'To no melody and beyond!' (36 k, 145 sec)
June 13th 2001 - C Song - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Is this a song about the sea, or a training song for B-17 Flying Fortress pilots? Ok trainees. Raise your hand when the motors are out of tune. (14 k, 128 sec)
June 11th 2001 - Pushing The Limits - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I composed this with the idea of painting a musical picture of an athletic competition. (97 k, 94 sec)
June 6th 2001 - Basso Continuo - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Basso Continuo is one of the styles used in classical music. The bass line remains constant. Although, if a 1600s chamber orchestra had played music like this little piece, the whole group would have been beheaded. Oh well. They quit when they were ahead. (111 k, 164 sec)
June 3rd 2001 - JT_DESIGN - by Jim Taylor, based on Dan Rowe's Design theme. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Written 31 May 2001 using the Encore composition program with a Roland PC-200 MIDI keyboard for input. (58 k, 275 sec)

May 28th 2001 - The 4th Estate - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This piece evolved as I wrote it (between 4 and 6am, 20 May 2001). Sometimes, to compose, just start writing notes, listen to it, and see where it takes you. All music has a logical sequence, harmony and duration, but we often short change where a piece can go. This one could have been much longer, but it's a start. (37 k, 121 sec)
May 27th 2001 - End of School Jammin' - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Here's a little 'puter jazz for you. It starts with Mother Board taking a ride on the alto. Then, Hard Drive struts his stuff with a t-bone solo, and Silicon Chip ends with a screaming trumpet riff. Finally, they all jam together. May 22nd 2001 - Killer Bees - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Here is a little descriptive music, or should I just say composition, that, although not as musical as Flight Of The Bumblebee, might sound like the inside of a beehive. (88 k, 97 sec)
May 20th 2001 - Classical Fun - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This is CPE Bach's Solfeggio which had very little harmony to begin with. I added bass, chords and percussion. You can scramble eggs with this piece. (20 k, 51 sec)
May 16th 2001 - Bach's Clock - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I would certainly not compare myself in any way to Bach except that all modern music stems from his compositions. Here is a little piece you can use to put your kids (or yourself) to sleep. May 5th 2001 - Spacewalk - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Some music can be descriptive as opposed to melodic. I did not start out to write music describing a spacewalk, but later decided this would be an appropriate name for this little composition. Just compose and worry about the name after the fact. You can sit around all day trying to decide the subject of a song, but a song, regardless of what it sounds like, can imply a title. (39 k, 236 sec)

April 29th 2001 - Why, Why Do You Love Me? - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Here is a 50s style ballad. My wife said part of this sounds like another 50s song, but many of them sound alike anyway. (54 k, 249 sec)
April 27th 2001 - Take Off - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This uses the percussion sounds that the Encore composition program produces as well as a few MIDI percussion sounds. This plane definitely needs a tune-up, but it gets off the ground. (39 k, 47 sec)
April 23rd 2001 - Back to Work - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. There are limits to what a computer can produce musically. As I was composing this little seven measure piece, I had the "illegal operation" notice showing up numerous times. Man is only limited by his imagination. Computers are limited by the lack of imagination of the computer makers. (24 k, 47 sec)
April 21st 2001 - A Sequence for Saturday - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Traditional harmony and chord progressions can be replaced with atonal melodies as long as there is a rhythmic feel and pulse to the piece. April 10th 2001 - Little fugue - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. I thought I might go for "Baroque". Just think what Bach could have done with a computer. (11 k, 80 sec)
April 1st 2001 - Cadenza - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Here is that infamous cadenza by Gasphard Snooglesnort in the middle of the first Movement of Mozart's Piccolo Horn Concerto #3 1/2. Gasphard's valve either becomes stuck, or he forgets what key he is in. The orchestra finally comes to his rescue after twenty measures of frustration and wanting to get back to the one chord. I have it on good authority that this is how the I maj 7 chord came to be. (5 k, 85 sec)
March 31st 2001 - Little March - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. Having sung good old Baptist hymns in church has a lot to do with how my music sounds, unlike the impact of the 7-11 choruses of today (seven words and repeat it eleven times). I composed this in four hours, Saturday morning, March 17. I used a little (part of) March to write a Little March. (27 k, 92 sec)
March 24th 2001 - Variation on a Theme - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. This composition uses a very old public domain piece and ends with a variation based on another old song. (10 k, 85 sec)

March 11th 2001 - Message From Space - - by Jim Taylor. Copyright © 2001 James K Taylor, all rights reserved. It is my Song of the Sparrow with new sounds and tempo. This is what a message from space might sound like. It is not like my other MIDIs. There is no melody or harmony, but any sound can be considered to be music depending on the individual.
