At the beginning of the World War I, dreams of a free Poland seemed to be the only romantic pipe dream. The majority of Polish political parties were associated with some of the partitioning powers, counting on their triumph and concessions to the Poles. The exception to this was the environment activists gathered around the Jozef Pilsudski. They perceive in the war a chance to achieve the most important goal of independence.
